A monument to a truly fascinating moment in local history, this nearly 110-year-old post office was constructed to serve the Kaweah Colony. Established in 1886 as a Utopian social experiment, the residents were mainly labor activists from San Francisco, though some hailed from further afield. The group folded six years later due to internal conflicts and the Federal Government’s seizure of land to create Sequoia National Park, but this ancient post office serves as a reminder of the Colony’s vanished dreams.

One of the most stunning natural jewels in the nation’s crown of national parks, Sequoia National Park sprawls over 600 square miles. That vast acreage contains huge mountains and rugged foothills, deep canyons and vast caverns, and not least the world’s largest trees. The park is home to over 1300 native plant species and 300 native animal species. But if you have time for one attraction only, it’d have to be the General Sherman Tree, the world’s single largest tree measured by volume. Towering some 275 feet tall, it will reignite your passion for magnificent leafy greens (assuming we haven’t done that for you already)!
